Big inning dooms Central

Staff Report

WILKESBORO Surry Central couldnt keep its two-game winning streak alive Tuesday, losing 8-4 after giving up a big seven-run fifth inning to Wilkes Central.
The tables were turned for the Golden Eagles one night earlier, when Central slipped past Forbush 5-4 in 10 innings.
During that game, Central pitcher Austin McLamb struck out 11 in nine innings, and more importantly, kept the big Forbush bats at bay long enough to allow his team to come away with the win.
That team can hit the baseball, Central coach Matt Scott said Tuesday of the Falcons. They go to the plate like men, but Austin did a heck of a job keeping them off balance. He was big, and Austin Oakley came in and threw the last inning and that was big for us. We had to go somewhere else and he gave us a chance in the bottom half of the last inning.
Down 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh Monday, the Eagles rallied behind a Shane Johnson two-run homerun and a double by Casey Felts to tie the game and send it into the extra innings.
Central then looked to finish things off in the bottom of the 10th inning, with Luke Harris walking to lead things off. Ty Hudson then bunted Harris to second followed by Harris moving to third on a wild pitch.
Then with two outs, Centrals Tanner Hudson picked up a hit up the middle to drive in Harris and end the game.
I was so proud of them Monday, Scott said. They did things the right way. They were positive, they never got down on themselves or each other, they always kept pulling for each other and we scratched something out at the end.
Tuesday, Central came out with the momentum from Monday night against Wilkes Central, with the Golden Eagles jumping out to an early lead with a three-run first-inning, then adding another run in the top of the third to lead 4-0.
The lead wouldnt last however, with Wilkes Central exploding for a seven-run bottom of the fifth behind five hits and a home run.
Scott said he takes some of the blame for Tuesdays collapse.
I made a mistake and I left a starting pitcher in too long, he said. He had not thrown a ton of strikes and I take blame for that. He started leaving some pitches up, we walked a couple guys, we made a couple errors and then they get a couple hits.
Scott said he thinks the Golden Eagles need to work on being steady night in and night out.
I wish we could be more consistent, Scott said. We are awfully, awfully good at times and we are not so good at other times. When we can get to the point where we can be pretty good all the time, Ill take that. To be really good, youve got to be consistent. You cant rely on those peaks being a little higher than the valleys. Its a short season, so yeah I want to learn from it, but if we want to get to where we want to be and need to be, you cant keep putting it off.
