PILOT MOUNTAIN The East Surry baseball team nearly hit as many home runs as it played innings on Friday.
Four separate swings of the bat resulted in the ball landing on the far side of the fence in the Cardinals 14-1 five-inning slaughter of visiting Alleghany. Andrew Hunter, Logan Needham, Troy Jessup and Patrick Marion all homered.
Alleghany threatened to make a game of it by scoring in the top of the first inning, but the Cardinals (15-6, 10-4 Northwest 1A) quickly answered back when Hunter led off the East Surry portion of the inning with a bomb.
During a six-run second inning, Marion homered after Jessup led off the inning with another blast.
In the third, Needham contributed four of his teams five runs with a grand slam that also scored Brett Smith, Jonah Easter and Walt Tuttle.
While it arguably was the most over-the-fence home runs in East Surry history, there is no disputing how impressive Fridays feat was.
I havent seen that many leave in one game in a while, East Surry coach Barry Hall said.
When the ball stayed inside the park, the Trojans woes were far form over. East Surry pounded out twelve hits.
Weve been hitting the ball real well lately, Hall said. Thats at least three games in a row, maybe more, where weve had double-digit hits.
After a tumultuous start to the season hitting-wise, when the Cardinals had to learn that not everything that lands in the backstop is hittable, things could not be better.
The biggest thing has been hard work, Hall said. Not too long ago we were a horrible hitting team. We were undisciplined. The kids have worked hard in practice. They started laying off the bad pitches and making pitchers give them something to handle.
Needhams one hit garnered a game-high four RBIs. Jessup finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Marion drove in a pair.
Winning pitcher Cody Rodgers struck out four in four innings of work.
East Surry travels to South Stokes Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. clash.
