Northwest players dominate regionals

KING The NCHSAA 1A girls tennis regional tournament was dominated by the Northwest.
East Surrys Megan Shelton defeated Jordan Jackson of Mount Airy, 6-1, 6-0, to claim the singles title. In doubles, the Granite Bears duo of Ellie Case and Jordan Gwyn held off Bishop McGuinness Elizabeth Davis and Emily Ciriano in a thrilling match that Mount Airy won by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Case and Gwyn faced the Villains tandem for the third time this year and avenged a defeat earlier this season in the conference tournament.
They beat us pretty well in the conference tournament, Mount Airy coach Scott Kniskern said. So we did a really good job. We played hard. It was a tough match, but we found a way to win.
The singles final was also a rematch, as Shelton downed Jackson for the fourth time this year.
Shes got that whole senior against a freshman thing going, is how Kniskern summed up Sheltons dominance over Jackson.
The Granite Bears will compete in the overlapping team tennis tournament and host Avery County today at 4:30 p.m. The individual playoffs continue Friday.
In 2A action, Surry Centrals Tara Dockery played her way into the semifinals, but lost two consecutive matches to take fourth place.
