EAST BEND The Surry Central boys got themselves in a hole and couldnt dig their way out against Forbush Friday night.
After taking a 10-9 lead after the first quarter, the Golden Eagles (9-13, 1-10) fell behind 30-21 by halftime, and things got worse after that.
We got down by 11 points in the third quarter, Surry Central coach Ken Eiswald said. We came back and cut it down to three points with a minute and a half left, and (Forbushs) Matthew Smitherman got a steal in our backcourt, got a score and got fouled. That was the end of our comeback.
Despite the foiled attempt at a comeback, Eiswald was happy with his teams effort.
Austin McLamb really played well tonight, took a lot of good shots, got us some defensive rebounds, brought energy on the defensive end which he always does, Eiswald said.
Smitherman wreaked havoc all night. He scored 18 of his 22 points in the first half.
Surry Central also had problems offensively. The Golden Eagles made just one of 10 3-point attempts.
The Golden Eagles play Tuesday at East Wilkes and host Starmount Thursday.
