A Mount Airy man has been charged with driving while impaired following a one-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon.
Lester Alexander Gwyn, 52, of 451 W. Virginia St. was taken to Northern Hospital of Surry County by Surry County EMS after his car flipped over a guard rail into a deep ravine along U.S. 52 near H& W Trucking.
According to Senior Patrol Officer Terry Shelton of the Mount Airy Police Office and eyewitnesses, at about 4:30 p.m., Gwyn was traveling north on U.S. 52 when his 1977 Chevrolet pick-up went into the median on the left the right side of the road. It appeared he then overcorrected and went airborne, landing in the southbound lanes of the highway.
The vehicle then struck the guard rail causing it to go airborne again before landing overturned down a steep embankment. Shelton said the condition of the victim was unknown, but he was responsive when emergency officials reached him.
I know he was impaired and was given a blood test, Shelton said. I think impairment played a big role in this accident.
Gwyn was charged with driving while impaired later Saturday afternoon.
The Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Mount Airy Fire Department and Mount Airy Police Department responded to the scene.
