With the 2008-09 school year two-thirds through, B.H. Tharrington Primary School is asking parents to begin thinking about pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration for the next school year.
The school will hold registration for both programs on March 4 5 from 8 a.m. 6 p.m. both days. Parents are asked to bring their childs birth certificate, social security card, immunization record and proof of address to the registration.
Administrators and teachers at the school ask that parents register their children early so the school can be better prepared for next years enrollment figures.
The school benefits by receiving advance notice on the approximate number of future students, thus allowing time to prepare for classroom and teacher adjustments, said Lydia Lovell, principal.
Registration also gives parents an opportunity to tour the school, meet with teachers and ask any questions they may have. The school also provides information to help parents prepare their students for attending school in the fall and about the state requirements for enrollment. Parents also have the opportunity to schedule a time for screening for incoming kindergartners.
A new state law affecting enrollment will go into action for the 2009-10 school year. According to the new law, students must turn five on or before Aug. 31 to enroll in kindergarten. Likewise, students must turn four on or before Aug. 31 to enroll in the pre-kindergarten program.
The new law considers and provides a more developmentally appropriate time frame for enrollment of children entering kindergarten, said Lovell.
