HICKORY N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement agents recently charged 19-year-old Joshua Hembree with involuntary manslaughter and felony death by motor vehicle following a fatal accident April 18. In addition, the State Highway Patrol charged Hembree with driving while impaired.
The charges come after an extensive investigation involving the death of Michael Dehart, a passenger in Hembrees vehicle who died at the scene of the accident. Hembree, of 2637 Ararat Road, Ararat, was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Hembree and Dehart had been at a party in a remote cabin in Thurmond when they left for home, according to authorities. The accident occurred eight miles northwest of Pilot Mountain on State Road 2019 at 7 a.m. when Hembree ran off the road and struck a tree.
N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement, Surry County District Attorneys Office and the State Highway Patrol have been conducting this investigation for several months.
Our investigation focused mostly on the events that lead up to the accident, said Special Agent in Charge Mark Senter.
Hembree was placed under a $50,000 bond.
