PILOT MOUNTAIN Sam Flippin Christian, 90, of Pilot Mountain, died early Wednesday morning, July 22, 2009, at Village Care in King. Mr. Christian was born in Surry County on Nov. 4, 1918, to the late Charles and Jennie Meggs Neal Christian. Mr. Christian served in the Army as a medic during WWII and the Korean War and afterward at the Walter Reid Hospital. After retiring from the Army with the rank of staff sergeant, he served 15 years at Holy Cross Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was a member of Westfield Baptist Church. Surviving are one stepson and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Helen Sauls of Chattanooga, Tenn.; one grandson and wife, Raymond K. and Cherri Sauls of Ashby, Mass.; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Elizabeth and Jillian Sauls; one great-great-grandchild, Rayanne Sauls; a special grandnephew and caregiver, Bryan Christian; and many nieces and nephews and their families. Mr. Christian was preceded in death his parents; wife of 49 years, Mary Craig Christian; one stepson, Eddie Sauls; and six brothers, Robert Reid Christian, John Foster Christian, Frank Glenn Christian, Charles Thomas Christian, William Bryan Christian and Ralph Wayne Christian. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Cox-Needham Chapel at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joel Stephens and the Rev. Clifford Christian officiating. Interment will follow in the Westfield Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors by VFW Post 2019 of Mount Airy and VFW Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain and the NC Honor Guard. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Cox-Needham Funeral Home from 10 to 11 a.m. Cox-Needham Funeral Home of Pilot Mountain is assisting the Christian family.
