Just one game into 2009, the Mount Airy girls soccer team nearly equaled its success of last season, defeating visiting Galax, 9-0.
Having scored just 10 goals and won two games in 2008, the Granite Bear girls got off to a break-neck start in Fridays rout, scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of game time.
Because the Bears did not win their first game until much further into the season a year ago, Mount Airy coach Andrew Howard said he was pleased with Fridays performance.
I pretty happy that we won one, Howard said. It was a definite spirit lifter to get that first win in our first game. It will help us the rest of the year that we got that win out of the way.
Lindsay Casstevens led Mount Airy to the win with four goals, with Erica Watson adding three goals, followed by Kristen Crotts and Liz Merritt, who added one goal each.
Howard said he thought the Bears moved, passed the ball and communicated well Friday, facets of the game he said helped his team take a 4-0 first half lead.
We have a game Monday against Thomasville, Howard said. Even though we won, we have to stay focused on our goals that we set.
Howard said he thinks this years squad should be improved from last years struggles, with all but two players returning.
We are trying to change the attitude here, Howard said. This is the 10th year we have had girls soccer and I don t think in any of the 10 we have had a winning season and we are trying to get out of that losing mentality and try to turn it around little by little.
