Mount Airys Matt Kessler is on summer vacation, but he showed hes still in the swing of the school year by dominating on the Granite Bears tennis courts.
Kessler, who will be a sophomore in the fall, won the 16-and-under division of the Mount Airy Junior Futures tennis tournament Saturday. He defeated Jonesvilles Tyler Macy, 6-3, 6-0, for the win. Kessler is the reigning Northwest 1A singles champion as well.
Teammate Alex Ilyasov did not fare as well, but still made a valiant effort by advancing to the semifinal round of the 18-and-under division.
In 14 boys, Currie Carpenter, also of Mount Airy, advanced to the final round before succumbing. Mitch Kessler was knocked out in the semifinals of the same division. Dobson resident Alexander Fowler fought his way into a Sunday consolation match for third.
The girls portion of the tournament was held at Cross Creek Country Club. In 16 play, Merry Kessler and Alex Rigney both of Mount Airy made it as far as the semifinal round.
The 14 girls consolation semifinal featured a matchup of two Mount Airy players when Haley Thomas dropped Chainey Kuykendall, 6-1, 6-3. Thomas lost in the consolation final.
Sara Glasco of Mount Airy made it to the semifinals of the 12 division, and Micaela Tumbarello fell in the quarterfinal consolation of the same class.
Play resumes today at Cross Creek.
