A mentally disabled man from Canada found himself living a travelers nightmare Friday when he became stranded in Surry County after his family accidentally left him at a rest area.
The incident had a happy ending after the family was reunited with their son. The 30-year-old Jonathan, whose last name was unavailable, told workers at the state welcome center on Interstate 77 that he had visited the restroom there after his family exited the highway Friday afternoon.
When he returned to the parking lot, Jonathan found the car was not there.
I dont know how they left him, said a representative of the Surry County Department of Social Services, which became involved in the case.
The family was on its way from Canada to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to stay at a condominium for the holiday weekend.
Jonathan was able to provide an accurate description of the vehicle, including its license number. A two-hour search then ensued, leading to the family being reunited later Friday.
DSS officials made contact with other family members in Canada, who provided assurances that Jonathan had been left behind by accident.
Additional details on the incident were unavailable Saturday.
