PILOT MOUNTAIN In the midst of a stretch of three games in four days, the East Surry girls showed no signs of slowing down after dismantling Surry Central, 58-19, Wednesday night.
The Cardinals went on a game-changing run that stretched from the first quarter well into the second. East Surry led 3-2 early in the game, but proceeded to rip off a 27-1 run that didnt end until there was 5:09 left in the first half.
Any time you go on a run like that, you cant be disappointed, East Surry coach Robert Smith said.
The Golden Eagles coach, Mandy Holt, chalked the poor performance up to shooting woes. Another difficulty for Surry Central was the Cardinals trapping zone press.
I thought our pressure really gave them some problems, Smith said. We took advantage of their turnovers.
Courtney Simmons scored a game-high 12 points including 10 in the first half to lead the Cardinals. Kelsey Long chipped in 11 points for the victors. In all, 11 players scored at least two points for East Surry. The Cardinals led 17-3 after the first quarter and held a 39-10 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles got five points from Brittany Tolbert, while Hannah Harrison and Tara Dockery had four points apiece.
Both teams want last nights contest to carry over into their next game, but for different reasons. East Surry (11-1 overall, 7-1 in Northwest 1-A Conference) was able to play its entire roster, a move that gave some a chance to play and others an opportunity to rest.
It was a good win, especially with Mount Airy coming up Friday, Smith said.
To the credit of Surry Central (2-11 overall, 1-4 in Mountain Valley 2-A), it accepted the challenge of a good non-conference team. Holt hopes her squad can take some positives from the loss into their next game.
Were going to turn it around and try it again next game, Holt said. We play Elkin Friday and were hungry for a win.
