TOAST North Wilkes would use some late-game free throws to get past host North Surry, 61-59, on Senior Night.
Blaize Brintle led the Greyhounds with 21 points, while Tanner Easter and J.B. Coram chipped in with 10 apiece in the losing effort.
Ramon Andino led North Wilkes with a game-high 22 points, while Ty Johnson added 16 points.
North Wilkes would jump on the Greyhounds (10-8, 7-5) early as the would jump out to an early 11-2 lead before North would be forced to call a time-out to stop the run. After the time-out North would creep back into the game cutting the lead to five at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter North would score the first six points to take its first lead of the game at 18-17. With the score knotted at 27, things began to get a little heated as Norths Chris Mack would be called for an intentional foul which would spark a 8-0 North Wilkes run to take a 35-29 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter went back and forth with neither team being able to find any offensive game as the Greyhounds would outscore the Vikings 10-7 to cut the lead down to three entering the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Brintle would catch fire going on a 8-0 run all by himself to put the Greyhounds ahead at 47-45. North Wilkes wouldnt be outdone however, as Tim Johnson would connect on a 3-pointer to give the Vikings the lead back. After another Johnson basket North Wilkes would push its lead to 50-47 lead with four minutes remaining.
After some missed opportunities from the free-throw line from North Wilkes, Easter would nail a 3-pointer from the left corner with just over a minute remaining to cut the lead to one at 56-55 but that would be as close as the Greyhounds got.
North Wilkes would connect on just enough free-throws and survive a last-second heave from halfcourt by Tanner Hiatt which would fall short as the horn sounded and give North Wilkes the victory
North Surry head coach Chris Butler said his teams struggles on the defensive side of the ball played a role in the outcome. We struggled to guard them. They got in the paint way too much, and kicked the ball out to the open man and knocked down their shots.
North Surry honored seniors John Hughes and Triston Kyle before the girls game as the teams only seniors.
North Surry will be back in action Thursday afternoon as it travels to East Surry to battle the Cardinals in a non-conference game.

Lady Hounds rout North Wilkes

North Surry used a big first half to get past visiting North Wilkes, 56-22, last night.
In the first quarter neither team could seem to find the basket until North Surrys Nicole Rumplash would break a scoreless tie with about five minutes remaining in the quarter.
From that point on it was all Greyhounds. North Surry would outscore the Vikings 14-1 in the first quarter. North head coach Shane Slate said the teams start set the tone of the game. We got the start we were looking for defensively, while also getting the shots we wanted on the offensive end.
In the second quarter it was much of the same as North Surry would start the quarter on a 14-0 run to push its lead to 28-1 before the Vikings would score again. North Surry woud take a 35-4 lead into the break. Slate had nothing but high praise for his teams play in the second quarter. In the second quarter we got into a rhythm and we were patient and got good shots, said Slate.
In the second half, with the game well in hand, North Surry fell back into a zone defense as it would outscore the Vikings 21-18 in the half to take the victory.
Rumplash led the Greyhound attack with a game-high 14 points while Morgan Bunker chipped in with nine points, as every Lady Greyhound woud get in the in the box score.
Slate credits a good team effort in the win. Everyone got to play alot of minutes tonight and did a good job. When everyone scores you know youve had a good night. added Slate
Amanda Owens led North Wilkes with eight points.
Before the game Norths two seniors Shante Ashmon, and Samantha Simpson were honored before playing their last home games.
