ARTESIA, N.M. Mr. Joe Young, 81, of Artesia, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Alleghany Rehabilitation Center in Sparta, N.C., a former resident of Golden Living Center in Mount Airy. Mr. Young was born in Dekalb, Texas, on March 30, 1927, to the late James Harvey and Amanda Pearl Welch Young. Mr. Young served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a driller on an oil rig for over 30 years. Mr. Young is survived by his wife, Catherine Eileen Sinclair Young of Artesia; two daughters and son-in-law, Jolene Elsesser of Corvallis, Mont., and Linda and David Brown of Mount Airy; a son, Richard Carter of Alamogardo; grandchildren, Amy Gravely and husband Andy, Melissa Brown and Eric Brown, all of Mount Airy, and Rhonda, Crystal and Michael Carter of New Mexico; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel West of Artesia; and a nephew, Bobby West and wife, Suzanne, of Artesia. In addition to his parents, Mr. Young was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. The family will receive friends Friday, March 20, 2009, from 10 a.m. to noon at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family will have a private graveside service at a later time.
