KINSTON Surry defeated Lenoir in three sets on Saturday in a Region X volleyball match-up. Surry took the first game, 25-20, after breaking a 16-16 tie with four consecutive points behind the serving of Brittany Draughn. Surry went up, 2-0, with a 25-12 decision behind outstanding play from middle hitter Cassie Durham.
Durham led the Knights with twelve kills while adding six blocks. Surry closed out the match by capturing the third set, 25-16, over the Lancers getting solid front row play from Hannah Fulk (left), Patty Murphy, and Amber Owens.
We had a very good effort from our entire team, stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. It was good to see us bounce back and play much better. We played well in all facets of the game. Surry returned home on Tuesday against Vance-Granville in another Region X conference game in which Surry defeated Vance-Granville in straight sets.
The Knights took game one, 25-7 after starting the match 6-0 behind the serving of Alyssa Parker.
Surrys Mallorie Vogler then extended the Surry lead to 13-2 with four consecutive aces. Game two was much the same with the Knights racing out to a 7-0 lead over the Vanguards before capturing the set, 25-11. Surry closed out the match with a 25-16 score in the third set.
We were able to get everyone some needed playing time, stated Surry coach Jan Marion-Kiser. We had several rotations and had an opportunity to work some players in different situations. We had a really balanced attack and did an outstanding job for the service line.
The Knights were led offensively by Cassie Durham, Patty Murphy, and Mallorie Vogler with eight kills each. Durham added two service aces, two digs, and three blocks while Murphy contributed three blocks, and one dig. Volger also led the Knights with eight service aces while adding two digs.
Amber Owens contributed three kills and one block with Tori Nelson adding two kills, two digs, and an assist. Jordan Ball also had one kill for the Knights. Libero Brittany Draughn led the Surry defense with 15 digs while also adding four service aces.
Defensive specialist Taylor Moxley notched eight digs and also recorded two aces. Setter Alyssa Parker recorded 17 assists and four service aces while teammate Caitlin Voigt notched ten assists.
The Knights will then host a Dig Pink event on Thursday against Piedmont Baptist College at 6 p.m. The event is designed to raise awareness for breast cancer.
We certainly want the gym packed for all our home games, but especially our Dig Pink game against Piedmont,said Marion-Kiser. Hopefully, everyone will come out, wear pink, and cheer on the Lady Knights.
Surry (10-2) will close out a three game home stand against Johnston Community College on Friday with another Region X game starting at 4 p.m.
