East Surry picks up its second win over Mount Airy

Prior to East Surrys at-bat in the bottom of the second inning against Mount Airy Friday, Cardinals coach Derrick Hill gathered his girls together and the team broke the huddle with a chant of Hits, hits, hits.
Maybe they should have said hit, walk, hit.
Morgan Chilton hit a single, Paige Honeycutt walked and after both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, Jenna Pruitt smacked an opposite-field single into right field, scoring both runners. The Cardinals put the game away with a five-run sixth inning before winning, 8-0.
East Surry came through with 12 hits in the game, while holding the Granite Bears to two hits. Hill said patience was the key for his team.
Early in the game we were swinging at pitches we shouldnt have been swinging at, he said. After that we settled down.
Chilton and Courtney Simmons went 2-for-4, while Honeycutt was 2-for-3. Sara Harris belted a double for Mount Airy.
Mount Airy can be consoled by the fact that it is vastly improved team from the first meeting, won 12-1 by East Surry.
I told the kids before the game started I can tell (Mount Airy is) more ready to play than they were last time, Hill said.
The Granite Bears played strong defense, none better than right fielder Liz Ballard, who made a diving catch along the right-field line that saved what surely would have been an extra-base hit in the fifth.
She tends to make some diving catches that are phenomenal, Mount Airy coach Olivia Bolen said. Shell dive, shell get dirty, shell do whatever it takes.
A big reason Mount Airy was held to two hits was East Surry pitcher Hayley Shelton. Shelton mixed her pitches well and kept the Granite Bears off-balance with an excellent changeup.
They kept getting us on the changeup and I dont blame them, Bolen said. We couldnt hit them, so they kept throwing them.
Mixing up pitches is point of pride for the Cardinals. When a pitcher like Shelton can execute, it makes the Cardinals a tough team to beat.
When she has confidence in (the changeup), she can keep them off-balance, Hill said. Weve kind of gained a reputation over the years for doing that sort of thing. We like changeups, we like rise balls and different kinds of things.
