The recent arrest of an Ohio couple in Galax, Va., turned up evidence linking the pair to recent vehicle break-ins in Mount Airy.
Both cases involved property being stolen from vehicles that were broken into at hospitals in both Galax and Mount Airy.
The case unfolded when a Galax officer observed a vehicle involved in suspicious activity on March 28. He and a fellow officer developed reasonable suspicion to stop the vehicle and investigate further.
That resulted in the arrest of Amanda Gail Twaddle, 30, and Daryl J. Young, 32, whose exact addresses in Ohio were not available. During the arrest, Galax police located property they believe had been stolen.
The couple subsequently were charged with theft and vandalism of seven vehicles at Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax during the early morning hours of March 28.
Some of the property discovered also was linked to similar crimes that occurred in Mount Airy the night before the Galax incident. Three vehicles parked at Northern Hospital of Surry County were broken into, totaling more than $1,000 in damages and property losses.
A Toyota Celica, Hyundai Tiburon and Ford Fusion owned by hospital employees were discovered with windows broken to gain entry. The victims were identified as Kirby Dale Anthony of Dobson, Brittany Michelle Dalton of Madison and Melissa Deann Walker of Mount Airy.
Window, door and molding damages estimated at $1,050 resulted, along with the theft of two car stereos, books of personal checks, a Navy blue duffle bag, completed passport forms and miscellaneous papers.
Details on any charges filed against the couple in Mount Airy were unavailable Monday from the investigating officer of the city Police Department.
After their arrest in Galax, Twaddle and Young were jailed pending an arraignment.
