CHAPEL HILL The Surry Central baseball team keeps catching teams at the wrong time. Just days after Starmounts Tyler Jackson fanned 20, the Golden Eagles ran into another buzzsaw. Behind pitcher Luke Hawksworth, Orange High School of Hillsboro grounded the Golden Eagles, 10-0 in six innings Thursday at the Hilltop Invitational.
They threw their No. 1 pitcher tonight and he threw a ton of strikes, Surry Central coach Matt Scott said. They played great defense and they can flat out swing the bats.
The defending state 2-A champs capitalized on a bases-loaded situation to plate six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Golden Eagles, however, failed to score when they loaded the bags in the top of the fourth when they were trailing 3-0.
I felt like we had a chance to answer in the top of the fourth and we leave the bases loaded, which weve done all year, Scott said. Thats a huge pickup when you can answer a score and we came up short.
Surry (7-6) resumes play at the Hilltop Invitational today at 4 p.m.
