Local residents can help avoid identity theft and aid a good cause at the same time by attending a shred-a-thon today in Mount Airy.
It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of Food Lion in the Lowes Hardware shopping center on U.S. 52.
Organizers say the event is an opportunity for consumers to dispose of correspondence or documents they dont want to put into the trash, which could find their way into the wrong hands and lead to identity theft.
The service is open to individuals only, with no businesses allowed to have items shredded.
A $5 donation is requested from participants, with all proceeds going to the 2009 Surry County Heart and Stroke Walk.
