DOBSON Surry Central picked up a tough loss to visiting Starmount Friday, falling to the Rams on senior night, 4-1.
The Golden Eagles played their second game in as many days, after losing to Ashe County Thursday in eight innings, 2-1.
It marked the third Mountain Valley 2A Conference game the Eagles have lost this season in extra innings to go along with two more one-run conference losses, giving Central a total of five one-run losses.
Coach Phil Bowers said his team has met tough luck this season but added the Eagles played hard Friday.
I felt like we played a great game, Bowers said. Starmount is tied for first place in the conference and I just felt like we had a little let down in the second inning but other than that I felt like we played a pretty good ball game.
The second inning let down Bowers referred to came when the Rams put up three runs, assisted mightily by three Central errors.
Starmount added another run in the top of the fourth before Centrals Brittany Tolbert smacked a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth to put a little life into the Eagles dugout.
It was too little, too late however, as the Rams shut the door in the seventh and went home with the win.
Chelsea Craddock picked up the loss for Bowers squad, pitching a complete game and striking out four.
Tolbert finished 1-for-2 with the solo homerun and one RBI, followed by Whitney Joyner (1-for-2) and senior Jordan Snow (1-for-3).
Jessica White (2-for-3) and Anna Aplin (2-for-3, 2 RBIs) led the way for Starmount.
The loss drops Surry Central to 5-13 overall and 2-10 in the Mountain Valley 2A Conference.
The Golden Eagles will play Monday at Wilkes Central in the first round of the MVC 2A Conference Tournament at 4:30 p.m.
