Bears spotted
in Greensboro

GREENSBORO Mount Airys Matus Kriska took sixth place at the 30th annual Hagan Stone Park XC Classic in Greensboro Saturday. He finished the grass course in 16 minutes, 19.6 seconds against a field of 228 finishers in the boys Championship Division.
Other Granite Bears runners to compete in that division include Bryce Pilcher (19:39.7), Glenn Lynch (19:55.6), Ryan Johnson (20:22.6), T.J. Maxwell (22:20.8) and Cory Scott (23:28.7).
In the boys Developmental Division, Josh Clark finished in 26:47.2. Sarina Russo ran a 24:25.2 in the girls Developmental Division.
The Granite Bears host a meet Tuesday at Dobsons Fisher River Park.

Local action

Of the three local Northwest 1A/2A teams in action this afternoon, two will put their undefeated records on the line. The North Surry girls volleyball team (19-0, 10-0) travels to East Wilkes for a 5 p.m. showdown. Also in volleyball, Mount Airy will host Virginias Patrick County beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The Surry Central boys soccer team puts its 14-0, 9-0 record on the line tonight when it hosts West Wilkes at 6 p.m.

5K on the Greenway

This years 5K on the Greenway takes place Oct. 10. The race begins on the Greenway beyond the horse farm and continues on a loop. The cost for the 5K or the shorter half-mile run is $20 before Sept. 30 and $25 thereafter. Runners under 18 can register for $10. Westfield signups

The Westfield Booster Club Youth Foundation will be holding basketball sign-ups from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Old Westfield School Gym every Saturday in October. The cost is $50 for one child and $90 for two or more children. For more information, call 351-5573.
