The Mount Airy boys tennis team recorded its third consecutive 9-0 Northwest 1-A Conference win, but it was not as easy as the score may indicate. The Granite Bears went into an extra set in three matches, two of which began the doubles portion.
We had some close matches, Mount Airy coach Frank Mayberry said. The experience of our guys came through in critical situations. It could have been 6-3.
Brooks Mayberry won his singles match in the extra set, then teamed with Matt Kessler to score an extra-set victory. The tandem of Chance Hall and Eric Belton also needed an extra frame to win.
Both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles won in a tiebreak and its a credit to their experience, Frank Mayberry said. In the first one, Brooks and Matt were up against a really good doubles team and fought hard and won the match. Chance and Eric were actually down in the set and they had to come back.
Despite a combined 27-0 score over conference foes, Mayberry realizes the season is still young.
We still have to play East Wilkes and Bishop McGuinness, so we arent celebrating yet.
The Granite Bears (3-2, 3-0) travel to Alleghany for todays match beginning at 4 p.m.
