DOBSON The Surry County Board of County Commissioners will hear from Surry County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ashley Hinson about project updates at its regular meeting Monday night. Hinson is scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
Following the invocation and the pledge of allegiance, Surry County Planning Director Kim Bates will present a public hearing on rezoning of property at 11269 N.C. 268 to 11371 N.C. 268.
The BOCC will allow public comments during the public hearing reference the rezoning petition, but any effort to discuss a particular business or business entity or operation will not be relevant or allowed, said Chairman Craig Hunter, regarding the upcoming public hearing.
The land in question is 117 acres along the Yadkin River. The county planning board last week voted 5-3 to recommend the commissioners approve the rezoning from agricultural use to industrial use, although the planners vote is not binding. During a public hearing, several planning board members said they were voting on the best use of the land, which is bounded by other property already zoned for industrial and commercial use.
At that public hearing, roughly 30 people turned out to oppose the move, and several said the rezoning was specifically aimed at providing a site for the Fibrowatt power plant. Although little opposition to the plant surfaced during a series of public meetings over the past two years regarding the efforts to recruit Fibrowatt to Surry County, several outspoken opponents have appeared in recent weeks as the project as inched toward fruition.
At 6:30 p.m., Rebecca Kassner, housing director, will present housing program policies and single family rehabilitation grant requirements.
Rob Johnson, with Martin, Boal, Anthony and Johnson Architecture, will give a report at 6:45 p.m. on a space needs master plan.
At 7 p.m., the board will recognize area Boy Scouts.
Following the presentation by Hinson, Jack Gardin, water and sewer projects coordinator, will make his presentation at 8 p.m. on the Forrest Oaks and Surry Acres water and sewer bid openings.
At 8:15 p.m., County Manager Dennis Thompson will present general county business.
A closed session is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
