MILLERS CREEK East Surry helped themselves in the Northwest 1-A standings Tuesday, defeating West Wilkes 5-2 behind a four run sixth inning.
The Cardinals struck first, picking up one run in the second inning. But West Wilkes answered back in the fourth and fifth innings, with East entering the top of the sixth down 2-1.
Christian Smith led off the sixth with a walk followed by a terrific bunt from firstbasemen Morgan Chilton, who tried to sacrifice but was able to beat out the throw. With two on and no outs senior catcher Paige Honeycutt hit the first pitch to dead center field, off the top of the fence to drive in Smith. Samantha Smith then doubled, knocking in Chilton and Honeycutt followed by Jenna Pruitt hitting a big single to knock in Smith to finish the scoring.
We did what we had to do in the sixth inning, East Surry coach Derrick Hill said. The response that we came up with in the sixth was big, but they didnt go quietly.
West Wilkes threatened again in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases, but Cardinal pitcher Hayley Shelton picked up a pop up to the catcher, a pop up to short and a ground ball to first to get out of the inning.
Im not sure if we played as well as we could, Hill said. But at the same time we were playing a really good team and they forced some of that. We knew going over there that we would have to play well. Now we have a game up on them, but we will see them again and it will probably be a war the next time.
