Library to hold amnesty day

ELKIN Seeing a real need in the community during these economically challenging times, and inspired by the success of the Dec. 18, 2008, Amnesty Day, the Northwestern Regional Library will hold another region-wide Amnesty Day today.
Patrons who have overdue fines and fees for any public library in Alleghany, Stokes, Surry or Yadkin counties may have all fines and fees forgiven on this one day by simply bringing in canned or non-perishable food items, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, etc. to the library. All items will go to a charitable organization chosen by the local library to help those less fortunate. Those without fines or fees are also encouraged to contribute.
During the last event, more than $243 in fines and fees were forgiven in exchange for more than 631 items and $155 in cash donated by patrons. The following organizations benefited: Danbury Social Services, East Stokes Outreach Ministry, Foothills Food Pantry, King Outreach Ministry, Pilot Mountain Outreach, Solid Rock Food Closet, Tri-County Christian Crisis Ministry, Yadkin Christian Ministries and Yokefellow Ministries Inc.
