North Surry swept first round opponent J.C. Draughn Saturday to open the 2009 NCHSAA 2A state volleyball playoffs.
The Greyhounds took the victory with games wins of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-9.
Coach Shane Slate said his team was not firing on all cylinders Saturday and he hopes to improve before the Hounds take the court again Tuesday.
We played an average match, Slate said. I would grade us at a C-plus or a B-minus. We were a little flat-footed in serve receive and on our perimeter defense. Draughn gave us some problems because they are definitely the best first round team weve seen in a couple of years.
Morgan Bunker had seven kills in the win, followed by Courtney Campbell and Sara Parker with six and Nicole Rumplasch with five.
Parker added on seven digs while Rumplasch had a strong day at the net defensively finishing with 11 blocks. Kara Hodges had 27 assists and was 18-of-18 from the service line with two aces.
Bunker finished 15-of-16 with three aces.
North improves to 28-0 overall and will take on the winner of Owen and North Henderson Tuesday in second round action.
