The annual Give A Kid A Coat campaign kicks off today beginning at 5 a.m. at local A Cleaner World stores.
Give A Kid a Coat is an annual program that solicits coat donations from area residents to supply to needy children and adults throughout the area. The campaign collects, cleans, and distributes approximately 25,000 coats per year and since its inception in 1987, the campaign has collected, cleaned, and distributed more than 600,000 coats.
The 2009 campaign will have its official kick off today at the A Cleaner World at 2527 Eastchester Drive in High Point.
This year, Give A Kid A Coat has issued a challenge to area elementary schools. From today until Oct. 30, area elementary schools should encourage parents and students to check their closets for coats to donate to Give A Kid A Coat. Those wishing to participate must drop off coats at A Cleaner World, and the donor should indicate which school he or she wants to receive credit.
A Cleaner World will keep track of the points. One point will be credited per coat up to 10 points maximum per family. Points will be tallied on Nov. 2, and winners will be announced on Nov. 3. Prizes will be awarded as follows: first place $750, second place $500, and third place $250. All prizes will be made payable to the winning schools PTA.
Last year, A Cleaner World in Mount Airy collected 2,800 coats. Local manager Cathy Poole said a local speedway made a last-minute plea for coats and collected 500 coats close to last years deadline.
If we could do that or better this year that would be wonderful. Its nice to get any size coat, but its better to get childrens sized coats. Everybody needs a coat, but the kids especially need coats, Poole said.
Anyone wishing to contribute to the 2009 Give A Kid A Coat campaign may do so by dropping off a coat at any A Cleaner World location beginning today through Nov. 28. Coats will be cleaned and repaired free of charge, then given to The Salvation Army for distribution. Distribution dates and times vary by city. Check with the local Salvation Army office at 786-4075 for specific distribution information.
A Cleaner World in Mount Airy is at 712 N. South St.
