Shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday, police responded to a home in the Flat Rock community of Mount Airy where a 26-year-old man was shot in his lower body.
The Surry County Sheriffs Office reported that Gabriel Delgoado, 26, had been shot at 164 W. Crosswinds Court at about 2:13 p.m. following an altercation at the location.
According to witnesses who spoke to investigators at the scene, an altercation occurred between Delgoado and involved at least two other people, the sheriffs office reported.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said a person believed to be the shooter had been identified, but no arrests have been made yet because investigators are still determining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
He also said its possible that along with the victim, a third person involved in the incident may have sustained injuries.
He could not offer specific details about what witnesses said while the investigation is active and wasnt certain about the relationship between the shooter and the victim or what caused the altercation.
We dont know exactly what (the relationship) is. Its real early in the investigation, and were still trying to get to the bottom of it, Atkinson said Monday night.
According to a statement released by the sheriffs office, while en route to the scene, deputies received a report that Delgoado had left the scene. He was driven in a private vehicle to Northern Hospital of Surry County, and then transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center by ambulance. His condition is unknown, but the sheriff said the victim had sustained non-life threatening injuries.
