The Surry Runnin Patriots pulled out a close win Monday on their Senior night, defeating visiting Union Grove 71-67.
The Patriots Luke Hamilton put up another monster game, finishing with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Surrys Daniel Shaeffer added 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the win.
Union Grove came out hot, hitting on 5 of 9 3-pointers in the first half. Union Grove was led by sharp shooter John Harmon with 26 points in the loss.
After Surry trailed 37-31 at the half, coach Lin Hamilton said he made some changes which seemed to work for the Patriots.
I told them we needed to put much more pressure on them and make them drive instead of shooting the outside shot, Hamilton said. We did a little more trapping and were able to force some turnovers.
With the Patriots increased defensive pressure forcing Union Grove mistakes, Surry jumped out to an eight-point lead, outscoring their opponents 23-19 in the third quarter.
Union Grove would not go away however, cutting back into the Patriots lead after Surry tried to slow the game down, committing costly turnovers in the process.
After Union Grove took a two-point lead in the fourth quarter, Surry hunkered down, using tight defense and good free throw shooting to overtake Union Grove and come out with the win.
Surry went 7 of 10 from the line in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Hamilton said it felt good to pick up a win for seniors Daniel Shaeffer, Josh Welch and Chris Brantley.
Yes it did, Hamilton said. Ive heard some teams trying to make sure they are going to win a game for their senior night but I thought it would be a good match up with Union Grove and it was. They tried to press us in the third quarter and we handled it pretty well and we got a couple of layups and they backed off. I thought we played well. Its a big win for us.
Behind Hamilton and Shaeffer were Josh Welch with 11 points, Aaron Gibbons with 8 points and 10 rebounds and Joe Claffee with 4 points.
Behind Harmon for Union Grove was Corey Carter with 16 points, Corey Ketner with 13 points and Joseph Bailey with 10 points.
With the win, Surry improves to 15-8 overall and will take on the Roanoke Home Educators Thursday at home.
