To all the runners and volunteers who participated in the Surry County Young Life 5K. It was a chance for a few area runners to congregate together and have some, all the while raising money for a good community group.
To the Easter Brothers, a five-member gospel music group from Mount Airy that won two Dove Awards last week. The Dove Awards, for gospel and contemporary Christian artists, are roughly akin to the Grammies for secular musicians, and represents the top awards of the industry.
To all the local volunteers who are out this weekend, raising money for various purposes. Sometimes it is absolutely amazing to see how the people in this community step forward to help others. Today, for instance, there is a huge Music for Life festival in Dobson with the proceeds benefiting Surry County Special Olympics; a free clothes give-away at the former Dobson Cleaners in Dobson open for anyone with need; a rummage sale with proceeds going toward Easter Seals; a pet adoption fair at Patterson Toyota; the annual Jerrald Williams Mitchell Scholarship Fun Run; a benefit at Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department to raise money for a local person suffering from kidney failure … the list could go on and on.
Each of these events, and so many others, have one thing in common. Local folks are putting their time and money up to have some fun, yes, but primarily to help others in need. As long as there are people like this here, Mount Airy and Surry County has a bright future.
