The second game of the Mount Airy girls soccer season played out in a similar fashion as the first a wide-margin victory led by Lindsay Castevens.
Powered by Castevens five goals and another from Ericka Watson, the Granite Bears turned back Thomasville, 6-1. On Friday, Castevens found the net four times to open the season.
For a freshman in her first two games, shes already got nine goals, Mount Airy coach Andrew Howard said. Shes on a pretty good pace right now.
After mustering just 10 goals all of last season, Castevens has given the team the offense it craved. At 2-0, Mount Airy equals its win total of last season.
Last season we lacked offense and (Castevens is) giving us what we needed, Howard said.
While the early-season offensive outburst is a welcome surprise, the defense is playing up to the standard Howard expected. Mount Airy gave up its first goal of the season with 45 seconds remaining in the game, narrowly missing a two-game shutout streak to kickstart the season.
We expected our defense to be good, Howard said. Were pretty experienced on the defensive side. Weve only give up like two shots in two games. Were doing a good job keeping the pressure off our goalie.
The undefeated Granite Bears travel to Surry Central Friday at 5:15 p.m.
