DOBSON One of the areas top community college basketball teams crossed the Virginia-North Carolina border and came to Dobson Saturday afternoon, handing Surry Community College its 10th loss of the season.
Virginias Patrick Henry Community College (10-5 overall, 3-0 in VCSS) built a 50-39 halftime lead en route to an 88-67 win against Surry Community College (4-10 overall, 2-4 in conference).
Leading the Knights, Joshua Nesbit scored a team-high 18 points, Jeremy Helms tossed in 16 points, Chris Boyce scored 11 points and Qasim Fredrick added 10 points.
But the Knights couldnt stop the Patriots Marvin Jackson. Jackson exploded for a game-high 35 points to lead the visitors. Marvin Brooks added 15 points and Ant Wooten tossed in 11.
Thats the most athletic and the best team weve played all year, Surry Community College coach Eddie Wilmoth said. I thought our kids came out and played hard. They (Patrick Henry) came out real strong, and our guys picked up the intensity and played with em. Our intensity level was really high.
Wilmoth was pleased with the performance of at least a trio of Knights Colton Foushee, Joshua Nesbit and Qasim Fredrick.
Colton Foushee had his best game all year, Wilmoth said. Josh Nesbit had a heck of a game too. Josh and Colton both played really well. Qasim Fredrick stepped up on the defensive end.
Nesbit heated things up from the floor late in the first half when he sank a 3-pointer to put Surry within five points of the Patriots lead at 38-33.
The two teams traded baskets in the closing minutes of the half as Patrick Henrys Josh McGill picked up a steal from the Knights with under two minutes left and went in for the slam dunk to put his team ahead, 45-37.
Helms added a pair of free throws to pull Surry within eight, 47-39, of Patrick Henry with just over a minute left in the half.
But Surrys attempt to hold for the last shot in the first half ended with five seconds on the clock when the team was called for a charge. Patrick Henrys Jackson would take the final shot of the half, sinking a 3-pointer to put the Pats up 50-39 going into the locker room.
Surry cut the Patrick Henry lead to 10 points early in the second half when Boyce nailed a 3-point bomb, cutting the lead to 62-52.
But McGill gave the Patriots a 3-point play on the teams next offensive possession, pushing the lead back to 13.
Patrick Henry went on a 16-8 run from there, before a pair of Foushee free throws for Surry cut the visitors lead to 81-60 with 4:35 left in the game.
Surry made a final charge at Patrick Henry, scoring six consecutive points, capped by an A.J. Royster basket off the glass, cutting the visitors lead to 81-66.
The Patriots outscored the Knights 7-1 in the closing minutes of the game to leave town 88-67 winners.
