Southern receives Eagle Award

In a recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor, Dakota Southern of Troop 541, Fancy Gap Baptist Church, was presented with his Eagle Award and rank.
Scoutmaster Ricky Wood presided with scouts of Troops 541 and 529 (Dobson United Methodist Church) assisting. Dorothy Sullivan offered a prayer followed by Scouts Josh Wray and Timothy Draughn presenting the colors (flags). Susan Sullivan commented on the beginning of the 12 Scout Laws; the scouts recited the Scout Law and Dorothy Sullivan offered a response.
Scouts lighted candles for each law and Bruce Childress and Peter Bloom III, adult leaders of Troop 529, assisted. Walter Reid spoke of the Chinese Journey. David Simmons presented the Eagle Scout Challenge.
Scoutmaster Ricky Wood detailed some of Dakotas awards including 43 merit badges and various church and school activities. Displayed were numerous letters and certificates of congratulations from The President of the United States, Governor Easley, Senator Burr, Representatives Harrell and Foxx, Navy Commander D.S. Kemp, U.S. Congress, Old Hickory Council Executive Steve Wilburn and the National Chief Scout Executive. A flag flown over the Capitol was provided by Senator Burr.
An honor guard of Josh Wray and Michael Moretz of Troop 541, B.J. Lawerence and Timothy Draughn escorted Dakota and his grandmother before the group. The Eagle Certificate was presented and the Eagle Badge was pinned on Dakota by his grandmother followed by an exchange of pins to her and to his scoutmaster.
Worth Haynes offered a prayer, and Scoutmaster Wood closed the Eagle Court of Honor.
Dakotas Eagle Project produced wooden benches for parents to sit upon as children play in a fenced play yard at the church.
A supper was enjoyed by all.
Other scouts participating were Nick Payson, Devon Simmons and Payton Simmons of Troop 529.
Dakota will be attending East Carolina University this fall.
