B. H. Tharringoton Primary School was honored on Dec. 4 by the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium with a Signature School Award.
This award is given to schools that have experienced significant improvements in the past year. As part of Professional Learning Communities, Tharrington implemented the Positive Behavior Support program with an intended outcome of reducing incidence of office referrals and in-school/out-of-school suspensions.
The entire staff embraced the proposed concepts then practiced and demonstrated the behaviors that they expected from their students. Discipline referrals were reduced by 49 percent from the previous year and out-of-school suspensions were reduced by 48 percent.
The added bonus was an increase in reading level achievement across grade levels which was attributed to fewer instances of disruption in the classroom.
