PILOT MOUNTAIN East Surry impoved its conference standing Wednesday, defeating rival Mount Airy 3-1.
After faltering in the third game and giving Mount Airy a 25-19 win East Surry used a strong start in the fourth game to seal the deal. The Cardinals started the game with seven consecutive points.
The fourth game East Surry got off a quick start on us so we never could catch back up, Mount Airy coach Sarah Knott said. Once we dug that hole it was hard to dig back out.
East Surry coach Deborah Voigt had a different take on the situation, saying her team realized the error of its ways in the third game and came out with purpose in the fourth.
Total loss of focus would be the best way to describe our play in game three, Voigt said. However, despite the loss, we regrouped and closed the match in game four. The girls knew they had let each other down in the third set and that I expected much better play out of them.
Tia Joyce led East Surry with 11 kills, three blocks and seven digs. Freshman Keri Fulp ended with eight kills.
Lauren Smith led the Granite Bears with six kills, followed by Katie Joyce with four. Skylar Davis finished 19-of-20 from the service line to lead the way for Mount Airy.
