Ballroom dancers enjoy fun and fitness

Dances like the Rumba, Mambo, Fox Trot and Tango were set in motion Saturday night as about 40 ballroom dance fans honed their dance skills during the monthly ballroom dance at Pro Health.
Bill and Carole Bryant hosted the monthly event at Pro Health that is sponsored by Carolina Heartland Chapter 6092, USA Dance, Inc. The two gave a complimentary 45-minute dance lesson to participants.
Our goal is to promote ballroom dance for all ages, Bryant said.
Carole Bryant is the North Carolina committee chairperson for Mayberry Ballroom Dance.
Dances are held once a month. They are typically held the second Saturday of each month, but in October, the dance will be held on the first Saturday of the month because of the Autumn Leaves Festival.
Bryant said the group promotes dancing for all ages. She said dance partners are recommended, but are not required.
We have two goals to promote a greater awareness of ballroom dance and a greater quality of ballroom dance.
A practice session is held every Tuesday at the Jones Family Resource Center, on Jones School Road, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $1 per person.
The doors for the monthly dance open at 6:30 p.m. and lessons start at 7 p.m. The cost is $8 for visitors. USA dance members pay $5 at the door and full-time students are $3.
The group is non-profit. Beverages are provided.
The Bryants are also going to teach a class for Surry Community College starting in September for beginners and non-beginners at the Jones Resource Center. The beginners class will be on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and the non-beginners class will be on Thursday nights at the same time.
