A three-goal effort from Angelica Gonzalez helped Surry Central give Mount Airy its first loss of the season Friday, 4-2.
The Granite Bears (2-1) scored first when freshman Lindsay Castevens bolted through the Golden Eagles defense and scored. Host Surry Central equaled the score when Savanna Snow scored on a rebound. Gonzalez, who was very close to scoring on the rebound before Snow put the ball in, added two goals to make the score 3-1 in favor of Surry Central at halftime.
We felt confident at halftime, Surry Central coach Blake Roth said. I told the girls we needed to work on some key stuff and keeping the ball in the back of the net wasnt part of that. We wanted to work on possession. Im still working on the perfect lineup.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) did in fact find the net again in the second half when Martha Perez scored. Mount Airys final goal came from a Lindsay Castevens penalty kick.
Surry Central travels to West Wilkes Monday at 6 p.m. In the previous meeting between the two teams, West Wilkes scored a late goal in a 1-0 game.
