PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. Kathlene E. Lewis Luther, 84, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., formerly of Arlington, Va., passed away on Sept. 24, 2009, at the home of her wonderful caregivers, Tom and Lisday Bernos. Kay was born April 6, 1925, in Mount Airy to the late Cephas and Ethel Lewis and grew up there graduating Valedictorian of her high school class. In 1943, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for several government agencies including the Veterans Administration where she met her future husband, Marine Lt. Colonel Eugene Luther. They married in 1947 and resided in Cherry Point where Eugene was stationed. Their first daughter, Tara Lea, was born there in 1952. In 1953, the family moved to Arlington, Va., where Kay spent the next 50 years and had two more daughters, Tanya Kathlene and Lura Elizabeth. Kay began a new career in 1974 as a Legislative secretary for Senator Warren Magnusen who she served until January 1981. Later that year, she joined the staff of Senator Robert Dole, where she served as Legislative secretary and then office manager until her retirement on Feb. 4, 1993. Kay moved to Florida in 2004. She was preceded in death by her brothers, James Lewis and Charles Lewis; and her sister, Gladys Druman. Kay is survived by her two sisters, Libby Lewin of San Francisco, Calif., and Bobbie Regan of Mount Airy; and her daughters, Tara Schmohl (Robert) of Hollywood, Fla., Tanya Kukral (Joe) of Denver, Colo., and Lura Teeter (Lee) of Charlotte. Kay has three grandsons, Parker Kukral, Rhett and Keane Teeter; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Services, Mount Airy, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy with services conducted by the Rev. Richard Loman.
