The Mount Airy baseball team squeaked out a narrow 4-3 win over Northwest 1-A conference foe Elkin Tuesday, playing for the first time since last Thursday.
With the win, Mount Airy improved to 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the Northwest 1-A.
Elkin got on the board with a four-run outburst in the fourth inning, forcing coach Mack Hodges to make a pitching change and call upon Josh Beasley to relieve starter Kendall Cawley. After the change, Mount Airy settled down and closed out the inning.
Still down 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Granite Bears would put three runs across the plate setting up a fantastic finish in the seventh inning without giving up any more Elkin runs.
Elkin just flat out outplayed us in the first five innings, Hodges said. After that, we settled down and regained our composure and finished strong.
In the final inning, Tyler Hull picked up a base-hit to start the inning with Tyler Neal coming on to pinch run for Hull.
Torrance Hamilton then connected on a double to drive home Neal and the game-winning run.
Our pitchers pitched well for us tonight, Hodges said. Beasley did a good job in relief, and Christian Easter finished off the game strong, striking out three in the final two innings.
Hamilton led the way for the Bears, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and two doubles. Andrew Pelfrey (2-for-3) and Christian Easter (1-for-3, one RBI) also helped to propel the Bears attack.
Kyle Whittman (2-for-2, two doubles), and Josh Carter (2-for-3, one RBI) led the Buckin Elks in the losing effort.
Mount Airy will be back in action on Friday as it takes on West Wilkes.
