A Mount Airy man has been charged with trafficking in opium and other violations by city police.
Robert McNeil Pardue, 35, of 108 Knob Drive, was pulled over while driving on Woodruff Street near East Poplar Street about 10:30 p.m. Thursday by Officer L.T. Whitaker. Whitaker had recognized Pardue and knew there was an outstanding warrant for him, police say.
During a subsequent investigation, a quantity of controlled substances allegedly was located on Pardues person.
In addition to trafficking in opium, Pardue was arrested on charges of maintaining a drug vehicle and possession of marijuana with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver. All three offenses are felonies.
Pardue was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $40,0000 secured bond. He was bonded out Friday afternoon, according to a jail spokesperson.
The Mount Airy man is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on May 20.
