The Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth league 12-and-under state tournament is finally over, and while no Surry County team took home the championship, Darren Lewis with the Mount Airy Parks and Recreation said the event was a definite success.
Bunker Hill defeated West Union County 7-4 to claim the title after defeating Stewards 7-6 Monday.
West Union led 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning but couldnt hold on to the margin, allowing Bunker Hill to score six runs in the bottom of the fourth and take control of the game.
Even though all three teams representing Surry County failed to make it to the final round, Lewis said Surry County was strongly represented in the crowd Tuesday.
Tonight at the champioship no local teams were playing but there was loads of local spectators, Lewis said.
I think its great for the local tourism. Last night after games were finished I went and ate at a local restaurant and the entire West Union team was there. So its a big local boost when we host any of these tournaments weather its baseball or AAU basketball.
