The Surry Central girls fought hard Wednesday but could not overcome South Stokes late, as the Sauras defeated the Golden Eagles, 47-43.
South Stokes got 22 of their 27 second half points from Stephanie Mitchell and Jodie Lemon, with Lemon scoring all of her 12 points after the half.
Central took a 24-20 lead into halftime behind Tara Dockerys 8 points and Brittany Clines 6.
The Sauras opened the second half with a 5-0 run to take the lead at 25-24, with Surry Central fighting back with a small run of their own.
The Golden Eagles had a hard time hitting shots in the third quarter, allowing South Stokes to take a 38-36 lead into the final quarter.
Things stayed close, with Central having a shot to pick up the win late in the game, with a possible game-tying 3-pointer from Emily Marshall falling just short.
Central coach Mandy Holt said her team played very well the night before against Wilkes Central, but had some what of a lag coming into Wednesdays game.
I dont think this was our best effort compared to some of the other games weve played, Holt said. The past couple of weeks we have really stepped it up but tonight we might not have had the legs that we had the night before although there are no excuses. They (South Stokes) made a little run and we just werent able to get the job done.
Brittany Tolbert led Surry Central in the loss with 10 points, many coming on rebound putbacks. Behind Tolbert for Central were Tara Dockery with 9 points and Brittany Cline with 8.
