The victim of last Wednesdays shooting at a Danley Road residence is still in the hospital.
Shelby Jean Scales, 39, was taken by AirCare to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on Sept. 30 in critical but stable condition with a single gunshot wound to the left chest from a high-powered rifle.
Kevin Danley, 34, of 308 Danley Road, was arrested at the Gas & Go on Cook School Road shortly after 6 p.m. that evening. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Danley is being held at the Surry County Jail under a $300,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17.
Danley was captured by off-duty Deputy Brent Trivette at the Gas & Go. According to Rick Wagner, the clerk at the store, Danley had been at the store for at least 30 minutes before he was arrested.
Authorities are unsure of the motive behind the shooting.
There was an altercation. A shot was fired, and she was struck, said Sheriff Graham Atkinson after the incident.
