MOUNT AIRY Mrs. Vella Marie Strickland Whitlock of 245 Lewis Drive, Mount Airy, was called home Feb. 15, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. She was born in Surry County April 1, 1927, to the late Floyd Chester Strickland and Florence Fralin Strickland. Mrs. Whitlock was a retiree of Wal-Mart Super Center, Mount Airy. She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Durmon (Ramona) Strickland of New York; eight daughters, Willa (Tony) Bennett, Debbie Whitlock, Theresa Whitlock, April (Lamont) Turner and Pamela Whitlock, all of New York, Dreama Whitlock of Winston-Salem, and Michelle (Michael) Springs and Victoria Whitlock, both of Mount Airy; three sisters, Levolia Tumpkin and Helen Taylor, both of Michigan, and Sadie George of Mount Airy; five brothers, the Rev. James R. (Jennie Belle) Strickland and Aaron Strickland, both of Mount Airy, George W. (Connie) Strickland of Michigan, John D. Strickland of Arizona and Joe L. (Mary) Strickland of Michigan; one aunt, Beatrice Flippen of New York; and two sisters-in-law, Lucille Smith of Mount Airy and Mildred Wright of New York. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Whitlock Sr.; three sons, James Whitlock Jr., Frederick Whitlock and Floyd Whitlock; one sister, Addie Nora Strickland; and one brother, Thomas Strickland. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Ridge Progressive Primitive Baptist Church, N.C. 89 East, Mount Airy. The Rev. James R. Strickland will be the eulogist, and burial will follow in the Strickland Family Cemetery, Athey Simmons Road, Mount Airy. Family will receive friends on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Edward J. Spencer and Pattie J. Spencer Memorial Chapel, Mount Airy. The family may be contacted at her residence at 245 Lewis Drive, Mount Airy. Spencer Funeral Directors is in charge of all services and arrangements.
