CANA, Va. Mrs. Virginia Dare Creed Vernon, 91, of Cana, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at her home after a brief illness. Mrs. Vernon was born in Surry County Dec. 1, 1917, to the late James William and Jessie Watkins Creed. She married Harlie W. Vernon on June 14, 1947. She retired from J.C. Penney Co. in 1980 after many years of service as the manager of the boys department. She was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church and most recently she had faithfully attended Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Cana. Mrs. Vernon was the last surviving member of her generation. She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vernon was preceded in death in July 1997 by her husband of 50 years, Harlie W. Vernon; a sister, Frances Creed; and brothers, James Creed, Clunette Creed, Edward Creed, Jess Creed and Paul Creed. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. David Buster E. Sechrist and the Rev. Roland McCraw. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
