Vikings top Central, 64-55
DOBSON A tough North Wilkes 2-2-1, three-quarter court press did Surry Central in during the Golden Eagles 64-55 loss to the Vikings Friday night.
The Eagles were not able to overcome a 17-point effort from Ramone Andino, and 12-point scoring performances from Dylan Johnson and Ty Johnson.
Leading Surry Central, Dave Wilmoth scored a game-high 20 points. He was the lone Central player to score in double figures.
One of the things weve talked about all year long is that its gotta start on the defensive end, Surry Central coach Ken Eiswald said of his teams efforts. We didnt come out with any intensity the first half, and they beat us on the offensive boards, beat us on the glass, and when you have to take a timeout just to try and get your guys to play hard, I guess as coaches, we just didnt have them ready to play.
They gave us some trouble with that 2-2-1 three-quarter court press, he added. We didnt spend enough time working against it, and it hurt us. Ill take the blame for not executing against it. Hats off to North Wilkes for a good effort.
The game was knotted 27-all at the half.
Surry Central came out with a 6-0 run to start the third quarter as Dave Wilmoth put in a jumper and Ethan Wilmoth, a basket off an offensive rebound.
But with the score 33-27, Central, the wheels started to come off the wagon.
Andino took the ball inside on a fast break for the Vikings and converted on a turnaround jumper, also being fouled on the play. He converted the foul shot for a three-point play, cutting Centrals lead to 33-32.
The Vikings then continued on an 11-0 run to rush out to a 43-33 advantage. Marvin Spicer ended the Central scoring drought going strong to the hoop for a two.
In the fourth quarter, Central closed the gap to within four points at 58-54 on a pair of Dave Wilmoth free throws, but they would get no closer in a hard-fought 64-55 loss.
The Golden Eagles have lost Jake Levesque for an indefinite period of time with a broken wrist. He was injured in Wednesdays practice.
I told the guys at this point in time I still believe were capable of beating anybody in the conference, and it depends on what kind of intensity we want to bring, Eiswald said.
Surry Central (4-6 overall, 0-3 in conference) travels to Wilkes Central for a conference game on Tuesday.
