A local organization is encouraging people to spend an evening to help celebrate the life of cancer survivors and help raise money to continue raising awareness about cancer.
March 28, the Surry Cancer Awareness Team (SCAT), is hosting its fifth annual Pink Ribbon Ball at Cross Creek Country Club from 7 p.m. until midnight.
The fundraiser will include dinner, an auction and music by Moose Entertainment.
Tickets are $80 per couple, and a sponsorship includes a table for eight for $300.
Some of those auction items include various gift certificates from local restaurants, said Lisa Goins, the event coordinator for SCAT.
Im calling it a taste of the town, she said.
Proceeds from the event go to the Surry Cancer Awareness Team, which is a non-profit organization made up of mostly breast cancer survivors who unite to raise awareness about cancer and help those who have recently been diagnosed.
We have done different fundraisers to help different people, Goins said. The proceeds will help support our efforts to help eradicate cancer in the community.
In the past the event has raised between $6,000 and $8,000, but Goins said this year there isnt a specific goal in mind because of the rough economy.
We feel that participation is going to be down this year due to the economy. We were actually going to do the ball in the fall, typically we do it the last week of October, but we held off because of the economy, she said. But people kept asking us to do it, so we really dont have a specific goal in mind, its really about the celebration of life for cancer survivors.
Those interested in attending can call Goins at 786-2296 to purchase tickets in advance, or may make a donation that would sponsor a cancer patient to attend.
Goins said she looks forward to the communitys support of the organizations biggest fundraiser of the year and hopes many will join in the celebration of life.
