For the first time in the schools history, the Mount Airy High School Fine Arts program hosted a joint Christmas Celebration Tuesday night, which highlighted the talents of the bands, the chorus and art students.
The idea for the concert came from weekly Professional Learning Community meetings between Art Director Kennia Beck, Band Director Katherine Hargis and Choral Director Gena Ray.
The concert included performances from the Mount Airy High School Girls Chorus, students from Music Appreciation class, the sixth-grade band, the combined seventh and eighth grade bands and the Mount Airy High School band. An art show followed the concert in the main hall of the school that included refreshments and a visit from Santa.
I thought it was great. I think it went smoothly for having so many groups performing together, said Ray.
She said the performance included about 100 students in all.
I am proud of the students. They did a great job, said Hargis.
They have worked so hard. The students and the staff did such a fantastic job of working together, said Assistant Principal Jason Dorsett.
I thought it was really cool having everyone working together, said Katie Jones, who plays flute in the high school band.
Souli Boutis enjoyed looking at the art following the concert.
I thought it was interesting and I think it turned out very well. We didnt even practice together before the show, said Boutis, who plays percussion in the seventh-grade band.
