John, Mayberry face familiar foes in finals

CARY All season long, Nick John and Brooks Mayberry have proved they are the best doubles team around, cruising to titles in the conference and region.
Now they have a chance to become the best in the state.
The Mount Airy duo will take the Cary Tennis Center court this morning in an attempt to claim the NCHSAA 1A doubles title against a familiar opponent: Ethan Lyon and Houston Callaway of East Wilkes.
John and Mayberry have squared off against Lyon and Callaway four times this season, with the Mount Airy tandem winning on three occasions. However, neither match has been easy and the Granite Bears two previous wins in the conference and regional championships have reached a third set. The doubles matches begin after the singles, which start at 9 a.m.
Ethan and Houston always play well against us, Mount Airy coach Frank Mayberry said. Were going into it expecting a really tough match. I really expect Nick and Brooks to go out there and do their thing and, hopefully, theyll be okay.
Mayberry said that playing Lyon and Callaway for the fifth time is a better scenario than playing an unknown opponent from another region.
I would say its good, especially since weve done fairly well against them, he said. (John and Mayberry will) know what to do.
To reach the finals, John and Mayberry, the No. 1 seed from the West, had to win two matches on Friday. First, they defeated the Easts No. 4 seed in Cameron Donaldson and Buddy Womble of Bear Grass, 6-0, 6-1. Then, they trumped the Easts No. 2 seed of Will Jackson and Keith Funkhouser of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, 6-3, 6-3.
North Carolina Science and Math has a really good program, Mayberry said. They were a scrappy twosome, but Nick and Brooks played really well. They were in control the whole match.
Todays clash may not be as easy, but it has a chance to be much more rewarding.
