ARARAT The sound of bagpipes and drums will once again grace the Patrick County hillsides with the coming of the Laurel Hill Highland Games and Festival at the J.E.B. Stuart Birthplace April 25.
The event, in its second year, will feature music, food, vendors and a number of athletic events. Beginning with the opening ceremonies and the parade of tartans, the day will progress to feature athletes participating in traditional Highland games including a stone put, caber toss, sheaf toss and weight throw for height events.
Last year we had about 20 athletes participating in seven different events, said Ronnie Haynes, vice president of the Laurel Hill Board of Directors.
The event will take place on April 25 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. rain or shine. Admission is $6 with children 12 and under entering for free.
Around 800 people attended last years event and organizers hope to see that number hold steady or increase this year.
We hope to make this an annual thing, said Haynes of the event.
